About the Author

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) is one of Russia's greatest novelists and a social dramatist who rejected his upbringing as a member of the nobility. He regarded the theatre in particular as a means of education the populace away from the moral degeneracy, brought about by the squalor of Russian peasant life.
Constance Garnett (19 December 1861 - 17 December 1946) was an English translator of nineteenth-century Russian literature. She was the first English translator of Dostoyevsky and Chekhov, and one of the first translators to render almost all works by Turgenev, Goncharov, Ostrovsky, Herzen, and Tolstoy into English. Altogether, she translated 71 volumes of Russian literature.
