About the Author
Carmen Boullosa--a Cullman Center, a Guggenheim, a DAAD and a FONCA Fellow--was born in Mexico City in 1954. She's a poet, playwright, essayist, novelist, and artist, and has been a professor at NYU, Columbia University, City College CUNY, Georgetown, and other institutions. She's now at Macaulay Honors College CUNY. The NYPL acquired her papers and artist books. More than a dozen books and over ninety dissertations have been written about her work.
The author of more than a dozen novels and story collections, Carlos Fuentes (1928-2012) was Mexico's most celebrated novelist and critic. He received numerous honors and awards throughout his lifetime, including the Miguel de Cervantes Prize and the Latin Literary Prize.
Laura Esquivel (Mexico City, 1950) is Mexico's best selling female author. Her first novel, Like Water for Chocolate, has been translated into more than 30 languages, sold millions of copies worldwide and inspired a critically acclaimed film. Other novels by her available in English are The Law of Love, Swift as Desire, Malinche, Pierced by the Sun, Tita's Diary and The Colors of my Past.
Amparo Dávila was born in Mexico in 1928. She has published numerous collections of short stories and for a time worked as Alfonso Reyes's secretary. In recent years a massive resurgence of interest has acknowledged her as one of Mexico's finest masters of the short story. She was awarded the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize in 1977 and honored with the Medalla Bellas Artes in 2015.
Sandra Cisneros is an American writer best known for her acclaimed first novel The House on Mango Street, and her subsequent short story collection, Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories. Her work experiments with literary forms and investigates emerging subject positions, which Cisneros attributes to growing up in a context of cultural hybridity and economic inequality that endowed her with unique stories to tell. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and is regarded as a key figure in Chicana literature.
