Through stories remembered and imagined, and images by acclaimed photographers, A Stranger's Pose draws the reader into a world of encounters in more than a dozen African towns. Iduma blends memoir, travelogue and storytelling in these fragments of a traveller's journey across several African cities. Inspired by the author's travels with photographers between 2011 and 2015, the author's own accounts are expanded to include other narratives about movement, estrangement, and intimacy. These include: an arrest in a market in N'djamena, being punished by a Gendarmes officer on a Cameroonian highway and meeting the famed photographer Malick Sidibe in Bamako.

About the Author
Emmanuel Iduma, born in 1989, is a writer who trained as a lawyer in Nigeria. He is the author of the travelogue A Stranger's Pose (Cassava Republic Press, 2018), which was longlisted for 2019 Ondaatje Prize. He has written for Granta, n+1, the New York Review of Books, BOMB, Brooklyn Rail, Guernica, and others, and received many grants and fellowships such as the Wyndham Campbell Prize. Iduma has an MFA in Art Writing from the School of Visual Arts, New York City and taught there for several years before moving to Lagos, Nigeria, where he lives with his wife and child.
Teju Cole is a photographer, novelist, essayist, and curator. His photobook Blind Spot (2017) was shortlisted for the 2017 Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation Photo-Book Awards. His other books include the novel Open City (2011), winner of the 2012 PEN/Hemingway Award, and the photobooks Fernweh (2020) and Golden Apple of the Sun (2021). Cole's photography has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions. He has been a visiting critic at the Yale School of Art, New Haven, Connecticut; and he was photography critic for the New York Times Magazine until 2019. He is currently a professor in the English department at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
