Dear special WOLA members,
These are the two main books that make up WOLA's first ever event on Resistencia poetry: discussing and celebrating the arts of Latin America and the movements that have inspired them. Get these poems in your hands right away by purchasing them through this trusted website, which helps independent bookstores sellers as well as outreach efforts for the Resistencia project.
It is spearheaded by the new anthology, Resistencia: Poems of Protest and Resistencia, with co-editors Tina Escaja and Mark Eisner (a friend of WOLA):
"Resistencia could not be more timely. It is a stunning collection of revelations and witness... Indispensable."
– Luis Alberto Urrea
“Resistencia is alive with bravery, feminism, strength, agency, protest, power and hope.”
- Ms. Magazine
“Resistencia is as uplifting as choral music and as devastating as the news.”
- San Francisco Chronicle
“Exactly the kind of book this world needs more of. . . . This is a must-read.”
- Book Marks
The event also features special guests, Reina María Rodriguez and her translator, Kristen Dykstra. Besides reading their poem featured in Resistencia, they will reveal Winter Garden Photographs, the latest jewel from an astonishing body of work from one of Cuba's most dynamic minds. It won the 2020 PEN Award for Translation. Kristin Dykstra won the 2020 PEN Award for Translation for it.
"Reina María Rodríguez confirms that her poetry speaks to those contradictions--in Latin America and elsewhere--that demand the open expression of literary care for society, identity, and modern life."
- Roberto Tejada
