“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.” - Mark Twain
"He who will not use the thoughts of other men's brains proves that he has no brains of his own.” - Charles Spurgeon
“Visit many good books, but live in the Bible.” - Charles Spurgeon
Reading is an investment of a limited resource: your time. Use it wisely. Try not to read any good books, only great ones.
————————————————————
I include a book in this list based on two possible criteria: (1) the quality of a book and/or (2) the pertinence of its subject matter.
In the descriptions below, each book is either categorized as introductory, moderate, advanced, or children, as well as other potential designations:
- "Introductory" are books that are very accessible to anyone.
- "Moderate" reflects books that are more in-depth but still very much readable and understandable for most people.
- "Advanced" books are much more scholarly works; they may be more difficult for those who are not as studied in these areas.
- "Children" designates books for children.
- "Practical" indicates the book has a particular aim at practical Christian living.
- "Technical" means that the book contains some technical elements like more sophisticated argumentation or use of Greek and Hebrew.
- "Archaic" means that, even if the content itself is not terribly advanced, the book's language is dated and may be more difficult to understand.
- "Devotional" indicates these resources are intended for use in a devotional context.
- "Reference" works are those that are not necessarily meant to be read straight through but are great to have available as resources to reference.
