This list honors more than three generations of indigenous authors who have contributed their voices to American literature.  November is Native American Heritage Month, a great opportunity to bring these authors and their works to your attention.

• Titles are listed alphabetically by author
• Authors are represented by their most notable book, except in a few cases where it's impossible to pick just one title or where the author is also the editor of a significant anthology.
• And, speaking of anthologies, the next to the last couple of rows of this list feature eight noteworthy collections of Native American fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
• The list concludes with eight cookbooks featuring indigenous food and recipes compiled by Native American authors.
