I trained during the "Dark Ages" of menopause, right after the WHI led women to throw away their hormones, so guess what? I didn't learn ANYTHING helpful for my patients. This books details the failures of the WHI study AND highlights the safety and clear benefits that menopause hormone therapy (MHT, formerly HRT) provides; update yourself for your sake and your patients. Casey Means MD

This book is a deep dive on Insulin Resistance and metabolic health. Like books in this genre, it's written by an MD who has left traditional western medicine, but I find her science and approach to be sound, even if I disagree with her on a few nutrition points.

bookcover for How Not to Age

How Not to Age

Michael Greger M.D. FACLM

$37.19

This is THE most comprehensive nutrition book on health and longevity, and has forever changed the way that I eat. He, like many physicians, glosses over emotional eating, binge eating disorder, etc as barriers to improving your nutrition, BUT I still think this is a MUST-READ.

Pick this one, or Atomic Habits, and then start making changes. So many physicians that I work with want to have better health habits around sleep, nutrition, activity, but we also struggle with that perfectionist part that wants to pick "the right plan." Let's get unstuck.

Warning: This book will have you in tears (and sometimes laughing out loud). This was my entré into the magic of Brenè Brown, PhD, LMSW, even though it is one of her middle works. How do we get up after a tough fall (like being fired for "no cause" (or "for cause", or going through a divorce). How do we own our story and grow through it?

The PLAN

Kendra Adachi

Book icon

I love Kendra Adachi, aka "The Lazy Genius" as she is known on IG and the podcast world ("The Lazy Genius Podcast"). She describes herself as a "perimenopausal recovering perfectionist with a caffeinated squirrel brain," and reminds us to speak kindly to ourselves, honor our season of life, read books and let go of being who everyone else wants you to be.

Likeable Badass

Alison Fragale PhD

THIS IS MY LATEST FAVORITE! Alison Fragale is a fantastic writer and professor who dives deep into the struggle that professional women face (bitch vs pushover? Qualified to lead or a sheep in the fold?). All women physicians need to read this book. Highly recommend as audio and THEN go buy the hard copy so that you can work through the exercises.

I love supporting small business, including independent bookstores and non-Amazon. As an affiliate of bookshop.org, I benefit financially when you buy books using my links, and if you choose to do so, thank you kindly!
