/May-Byooz/ - Debut Indie Books of May 2023
By Independent Book Review

There's nothing like reading a debut.
I'm a firm believer in the need for a healthy book diet. Regularity, sure. (You got to eat, right?) But it's not just that--it's about variety. Different genres, no doubt. Different formats, absolutely. Different reasons for buying though too! Read your favorite author, yes. Read an acclaimed author, yes. But don't you dare pass on reading a stellar debut! ✨
There's such possibility with debut authors. They could take you anywhere and only the places they can conjure up for the very first time. And I've seen such incredibly creativity with debut authors too, taking risks and exploring previously untapped corners of their studied mind.
Here are a few exciting releases coming out THIS MONTH from debut authors.

Kill Your Darlings
L. E. Harper
$13.99An author seeks refuge from brutal depression by writing within her own fantasy world. But then she wakes up in it! And she's able to hang out with people she cares about (and created). This set-up--combining the fantasy-writer ideal with escape & depression--is exactly the type of book writers, creatives, and outsiders will cling to. Heed the content warning though!

You Are Here
Karin Lin-Greenberg
$27.00 $25.11Small town friendship fiction is a genre I'll sign up for any day of the week. Set it in a mall, and I'm even further in. Have you been to the mall recently? The storefronts are ghost-towns, and the grandparents are getting in cardio. There are stories abound, and You Are Here captures it.

What You Don't Know Will Make a Whole New World: A Memoir
Dorothy Lazard
$20.00 $18.60This debut is from one of California's most celebrated librarians and public historians. It's the story of coming of age in the Bay Area in the 60s and 70s and the author's thirst for knowledge on her way to becoming "the queen of [her] own nerdy domain ."
