We writers get asked all the time, "What's your favorite book?" It's a horrible and completely unfair question, because as hardcore booklovers, we probably have several thousand dozen favorites at any given time. I'm a mystery writer, but that doesn't mean that my favorites are exclusively mysteries; in fact, most of them aren't. But every book on this list, regardless of genre, share something: an unsettled atmosphere and troubled characters.
