Dubliners: Centennial Edition (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)

James Joyce

$18.00 $16.56

By James McGough My favorite book by an Irish writer - Dubliners, no contest. Joyce’s book of short stories is a book of quiet revelations - epiphanies of sudden insight. “The Dead” is a long short story at the end of the collection. There is an interesting story about the movie and the collaboration between father John Houston and his daughter Angelica. If you read the final paragraph you’ll read them all.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and Other Stories

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

$24.99 $22.99

The first three hardback books I purchased, with my money, were collections. After reading The Hound of the Baskervilles, I purchased The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Other Stories with my friend Jay Amos at Shepherd Mall in the seventh grade. Yesterday I reread “The Sign of the Four.” The inseparable pair Holmes and Watson, his elder brother Mycroft, Lestrade, and Moriarty, are iconic literary characters. They’re fully developed from the psychology of Holmes’ drug addictions to morphine and cocaine to Moriarty's nihilism. One of the things I had forgotten was how terrifying the stories were when I first read them. Also, from a simple backstory, like the pearls in a box in “The Sign of the Four,” the complexity of the mystery evolves as motives are revealed. The edition that we have in the shop is from Canterbury Classics and it’s beautiful.
