Historical Mysteries

I love historical mysteries, and I agonized over which ones should make the cut here. Ultimately, I went with the series that have gotten stuck in my head: the ones with characters that pop with life and change over time, period quirks that I find interesting, and cases that keep my attention. I read a lot of mystery, and I think that these ones have the most binge-y momentum that will keep mystery fans hooked.

There are just three series recommended here. If you want mystery, but could skip the romance, go with Akunin's Erast Fandorin. If you like sexy banter, a HOT male partner, and an ass-kicking heroine, Veronica Speedwell is my pick for you. If you like the torture of slow-burn romance, a London setting with lots of interesting and period-correct details, and a Sherlock that's incredibly feminine, I'd recommend Charlotte Holmes.

A Study in Scarlet Women

Sherry Thomas

$15.00 $13.80

When I picked up a book that re-imagined Sherlock as Charlotte Holmes, I didn't expect it to be so realistic. Charlotte is almost uncomfortably relatable. My husband's pick for favorite sleuth.

Special Assignments: The Further Adventures of Erast Fandorin

Boris Akunin

$16.00

The Erast Fandorin series starts with "The Winter Queen" (followed by a few others), but they aren't carried by bookshop.org. Start from the beginning. Fandorin is a GREAT character: he's a state employee in 19th-century czarist Russia who has a mild speech impediment, interest in snappy dressing, and (eventually) distinctive silver temples. He has become a towering figure in Russia, where new Fandorin books routinely sell hundreds of thousands of copies.
