June 2025 Hartfield Book Club "'People are always trying to claim you, without ever listening to who you are.' Is cozy noir a thing? This is a classic Golden Age noir mystery with a cozier feel and a less cynical tone. The mystery itself is intriguing: The suspicious death of Irene Lamontaine, head of a famous soap empire, has her unconventional family on edge in their glam estate, Lavender House. Recently outed and ousted San Francisco cop Andy Mills is hired by Lamontaine's widow to investigate. What really shines here, though, is the gilded cage 1950s setting, the found family of characters, the lurking secrets, and the questions of identity. The series stays strong, too, so don't hesitate to pick up the next two (The Bell in the Fog and Rough Pages) or pair this one with Last Night at the Telegraph Club (a multi-award-winning YA historical) to explore another story set in the same era and area. May 2025 Hartfield Book Club "'I want you to close your eyes and actually remember what it was like to be 20.' Margo is a college student who is sleeping with her professor and gets pregnant. That's where the story begins, but I could not have predicted where it would go from there. This is not the tired story you think it is and Margo is not a stereotype (though the world certainly views her as one). Every character in this universe is fully formed, flawed and complex. Your brain will inevitably try to sort bad guys from good guys (or heels from faces as Margo's ex-WWE father would say), but it's not even close to being that simple. There are so many fresh and interesting and unexpected elements here that I've thought for weeks about how to get them all into a short review. How do you summarize so succinctly a story about power and consent, autonomy and community, addiction and ambition, childhood and parenthood, survival and control, professional wrestling and porn, love and agony? I don't think I've figured it out, but maybe the point is that it's weeks later and I still think about this book every single day. It's one of those rarest of gems — compulsively readable and highly enjoyable fiction that is also undeniably a work of art. It demands deep thought and quiet contemplation; it demands to be seen and deserves to be discussed. It's already been picked up for a TV series, so do yourself a favor and don't wait... This is the one that I'll be recommending to EVERYONE this summer." —Hartfield owner Nicole

February 2025 Hartfield Book Club "'Gather as much knowledge as you can, because information is power. And choosing how to use it is freedom. The more you know, the freer you will be.' An incredibly relevant, entertainingly satirical story of high school rivals dueling over a small town's heart and soul through the issue of banned books and one sneaky adjustment to the contents of a little free library. In turns sweet, messy, sharp-edged, and deadly serious, it had me smirking, nodding along, and riveted till the end. If you fervently believe in the power of books to change the world, get your hands on this one!" —Hartfield bookseller Dawn

January 2025 Hartfield Book Club "Quietly powerful, surprisingly cheerful, on the sweet side of bittersweet, intriguing, charming, philosophical, witty, and beautifully written... Towles works an impressive bit of literary magic to distill this much story and 20th-century Russian history into a single setting. Plus, the Count is just genuinely delightful company for long winter nights." —from Hartfield bookseller Dawn's 5-star review

Hartfield Book Club May 2024 — "Have you met my friend, Murderbot? ALL SYSTEMS RED is the first in a fast-reading, multi-award-winning series of novellas called the Murderbot Diaries. A deadly security cyborg hacks its governing module to free itself from corporate control so it can ... watch human soap operas and interact as little as possible with real humans. Wait, I am Murderbot? Are we all Murderbot? I love a story that explores the complexities of personhood and self-discovery in a creative way, especially when it includes a little snarky humor, a little mystery, and some unlikely friendships. This series gets all the stars from me!" —Hartfield bookseller Dawn

Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club

J. Ryan Stradal

Paperback

$17.67

Hartfield Book Club March 2024 — "The smoky, dark wood-paneled supper club - with its relish trays, brandy Old Fashioneds and motley collection of patrons and employees - is the constant through this multi-generational story of two families and a community struggling with what we inherit, what we should fight to hang on to and what we should let go. The characters are beautifully formed and realistically flawed. They struggle, they fight, they experience devastating loss. But, they also laugh, experience real joy and deep love. They change, they grow, and they keep going. Even though sad things happen, I never leave one of Stradal’s stories feeling sad; in fact, the opposite. Spending time in these warm, distinctly Midwestern worlds is a pleasure and the Lakeside Supper Club is no different. Bonus points for one of the most hilariously relatable / ridiculous, passive-aggressive, mother-daughter stand-offs I have ever read! Highly recommend!!" —Hartfield owner Nicole

Hartfield Book Club February 2024 — "Amina al-Sirafi has achieved fame as a notorious pirate, so it should be easy to enjoy the quiet of retired life. It should be, but not for Amina. Learning that a former comrade's daughter has been kidnapped, she gets the crew back together for one last adventure. And soon realizes there's more to this job than she was told and more to overcome than the aches and pains of middle age. Battling a magical sea monster, an insane sorcerer, and even her demon (maybe) ex-husband, Amina knows the payout will make her richer than she could imagine but can't help but wonder if the cost is worth it. Get ready for a wild ride with all the witty banter and great characters that keep you turning pages for more!" — Hartfield bookseller Sara

Hartfield Book Club October 2023 — "If, like me, you're a wimp when it comes to horror but a sucker for quirky humorous fantasy with social commentary, then I present for your consideration — T. Kingfisher! Her dark fantasies and fairytales are excellent, but here we have a contemporary Southern Gothic story that's sort of horror-lite. Archeo-entomologist Samantha uses her furlough to check in on her mother who is reportedly acting strange. When Sam arrives at the house, there's a vulture on the mailbox. Inside, the colorful walls have been repainted, a previously abhorred Confederate portrait has been rehung, and her mom seems on edge. What's disturbing her semi-retired suburban life? Will Sam's scientific methods and Google skills be enough to shed some light on the situation or will the multiplying vultures take matters into their own claws?" — Hartfield bookseller Dawn

Tova is an older woman who has lost her share of loved ones and, sometimes to her friends' dismay, copes by staying busy and applying Scandinavian stoicism. Hartfield Book Club August 2023 — "From the moment I heard about this premise — six amazing YA authors collaborating during lockdown to write a series of interconnected stories all set in a single night during a blackout in NYC, centered around Black Love and Black Joy — I started plotting to get my hands on this book as soon as possible. Blackout is a perfect summer. The stories are great, the characters and their respective love stories are authentic and adorable, and somehow they all seem to flow together in a way that feels, remarkably, like a single voice. Switching from author to author isn't jarring at all and having one of the stories broken up into multiple acts, so that those characters and their journey serve as a continuous thread, really anchors the narrative and creates a sense of movement toward the final destination where everyone comes together in a sweet and satisfying conclusion (HEAs guaranteed). The only downside: you'll wish for more time with each of these couples (I definitely need a whole book about JJ and Tremaine ASAP!). Film rights have been acquired by the Obamas' Higher Ground production company, so dream cast as you read!" –Hartfield owner Nicole

Hartfield Book Club July 2023 — 'Once there was a brave and temeraryous (sp?) girl who found a Door. It was a magic Door that’s why it has a capital D. She opened the Door.' "Set (mostly) in the early 1900s in (mostly) Vermont, this is the (mostly) coming-of-age tale of January who longs to join her father on his artifact-hunting trips but is stuck being raised in luxury and on display by their wealthy benefactor-collector, Mr. Locke. It is, of course, about so much more than that: a possibly real magic Door, a possibly evil Society, an impossible love story, the impossible power of words, the possibilities of courage and progress. I'm a sucker for a portal fantasy and this is a great one!" –Hartfield bookseller Dawn
