We wanted to take a moment to share a few of the books that we've been reading to celebrate Black History Month in our homes.
We always try to center books that are --
1) Developmentally appropriate for our kid's ages and emotional skills.
2) Joyous and uplifting of the contributions and legacies that Black history holds.
Although we celebrate and honor Black History and Black culture year-round, we make a conscious effort during BHM to center books that highlight stories of Black excellence that sit outside of the more commonly told stories of enslavement and the civil rights movement.
We feel that it is vital that children get to see Black stories that encompass a range of experiences, talents, and contributions, from tales of the great ancestors who have come before to everyday snapshots of what Black families look like just living their daily lives.
There are so many beautiful books by talented and diverse authors, so this list is most definitely not an exhaustive one. Still, these are a few titles we've loved this month.
