UPDATE: On May 22, 2025, the majority of the books removed from the library are back in circulation and are back on the shelves. We're leaving this list up here for now until we get a final list of the books that remain and/or have recently been added to the restricted works.
On March 30, 2025, 381 books were removed from the shelves of the United States Naval Academy’s Nimitz Library under direction from the Department of Defense.
This list includes just a few of the stories, memoirs, and voices that were taken down.
“The Pentagon might have an argument — if midshipmen were being forced to read these 400 books,” said Adm. James G. Stavridis, an author, Academy alumnus, and former commander of all U.S. forces in Europe.
“But as I understand it, they were just among the hundreds of thousands of books in the Nimitz Library which a student might opt to check out. What are we afraid of keeping from them in the library?”
