This list was made as a sort of gift for a family with a son reading at a high level at a young age. He had passed through the Rowling books long before and was looking for more. It was originally a blog post--if you go to the blog post, you'll find notes on the books and in some cases, a few books not available here. And there are a few here that I have added since making the original list. You'll find all sorts of books here, including ones that would be marvelous for family read-aloud sessions.
