Edith Stein was a renowned philosopher who studied phenomenology in its beginnings with Edmund Husserl. She eventually converted to Catholicism from Judaism and entered a cloistered Carmelite order, only to be hunted down and gassed by the Nazis at Auschwitz. She has some other excellent philosophical and theological writings, but I recommend her autobiography before anything else. Very good.
