The tarot is a deck of cards often used as a means of consulting and interpreting events (present, past or future), dreams, perceptions or emotional states that also constitutes a type of fortune telling. Its origins date back to at least the 14th century. The technique is based on the selection of cards from a special deck, which are then interpreted by a reader, according to the order or arrangement in which they have been selected or dealt. The tarot deck is made up of 78 cards, divided into major arcana which are 22 and minor arcana which are 56. The word "arcana" comes from the Latin arcanum, which means "mystery" or "secret".

The 22 Major Arcana are known as trumps, which means "above all." The name of major arcana is used in esoteric practice; the name of major triumphs is used in tarot as a game, in which only the Roman numeral is shown on each card, plus a decoration that is the same in each one. In the varieties for esoteric interpretation, each arcanum represents an image of an archetypal character, with numerous symbolisms. Although there are decks that have the number and the name, the older tarots do not have a number or name for these arcana.

The Minor Arcana are 56 cards divided into four suits, the "low" or "false" numbered from Ace to ten, plus the "honors" or "figures" that are the court characters: Jack, Queen, King and Knight. The suits are the same as in the common deck the nobility, symbolized by the swords; the peasants, for the wands; the clergy, for the glasses, and the merchants, for the golds, which are believed to be the four social levels during medieval times. Some decks use the golds, cups, swords and clubs, as in the Spanish deck and others the spade, heart, clover and diamond as in the French deck.
