In 1942, at the age of twenty-four, Constance Helmericks and herhusband, Bud Helmericks, paddled into the Alaskan wilds to liveoff the land. Over the next decade, Connie wrote five bestsellingbooks on their adventures, and co-filmed and produced threedocumentaries with Bud. Their work was shown on national lecturetours, and was twice featured in LIFE magazine, including the cover.In her later books, Connie wrote of her wilderness journeys acrossCanada and around Australia with her young daughters, Jean andAnn Helmericks. She became an early environmental activist, walkingmuch of the Pacific Crest trail alone while in her sixties.
