Description

Combining poems from thirty years of writing with new work, Coleman has created an indelible collection that's hard to put down. He mixes love, philosophy, the political, and social commentary with personal history, winding it all around the lives of black folks producing a heady mix of rage and insight while holding a mirror up to the broader culture. This is a collection of poems you will want to read over and over again.

This special hardcover edition of Nappy Metaphysic includes new poems not included in the original paperback version. In response to the extrajudicial killing of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, Coleman has written new work in an attempt to express his rage, sadness, and hope in the face of the continuing struggle to get the nation to understand that Black Lives Matter.

Reviews

Gerald Coleman's poems give us time travel, memoir and elegant polemic -- often all at once. His poems thread together entire worlds - past and present, superheroes and saints, a joyous American childhood and the mirror image of its discontents - in a way that stays with you for years. Nappy gathers the best of them.

With Gerald L. Coleman's Nappy Metaphysic the reader begins where "a natty halo/ of thick curls" was unquestioningly believed beautiful and lands in a place where anyone can have the name freedom fighter, and the bounty of a lover who "gargles with music" may be fully ingested once we know the taste of tomorrow.

I enjoyed this collection of poetry immensely. This collection has poetry that is evocative of Southern nights, love lost and found, Black pride, the tenaciousness of racism, and the love between mother and son. I laughed, I cried, and I put the book down many times to just savor the poems in my mind.
