Reviews

"[Doran] has produced a remarkable book about Queen Elizabeth I, one which will be of interest and is accessible to the general public and yet is also of great value to scholars in the field. Even those who are experts about the life and reign of Elizabeth will learn something new Elizabeth I had many circles around her. Centuries later the queen is encircled again by a noted historian who has produced a superb study."--Renaissance Quarterly

"Doran's treatment of the individuals who exemplify her "circles" is consistently judicious and exhibits genuine mastery over her subject matter [T]his is an altogether superior book and one that demonstrates scholarly instincts and a knowledge of the period of a much higher order [I]t offers a series of shrewd and reliably sound case studies of Elizabeth's personal relationships with those around her. As such, many readers will find it a valuable addition to the scholarship on Elizabeth I's queenship."--American Historical Review

-This is a readable, lively revival of a field that has languished in scholarship, despite the enthusiasm in popular culture for all things Elizabethan. The Elizabeth that is set within Doran's -circle- comes across as a smart, passionate, and effective leader who understood the frailties of her courtiers and had her own.---Journal of Modern History
