Cuba Viva

Kaloian Santos-Cabrera (Photographer) Silvio Rodriguez (Foreword by)

Cuba Viva is a highly personal attempt by one of Cuba's new generation of photographers to reflect the soul of his homeland--in snapshots of family, friends, and unknown passers-by, suggesting the colors, smells, and tastes of the island; its flesh-and-blood heroes, its dreams, songs, and poetry; and the pride of its people in the achievements of their ongoing revolution.

This book offers a unique insider's view of daily life in Cuba, beyond the clich s of tourist guidebooks and well-worn trails. It features intimate snapshots of Cubans in their homes, in the streets, at work, at play, and in bars and barbershops. The book includes a foreword in the form of a poem, "Cuba Viva" (Cuba is Alive) by the island's most beloved troubadour Silvio Rodr guez (Latin America's Bob Dylan) inspired by Kaloian Santos-Cabrera's vision of his homeland. Cuba Viva also includes English and Spanish text and 110 color photographs. A book for those millions of US citizens who dream of visiting Cuba or who have already done so.

Kaloian Santos-Cabrera (b. 1981) is one of a new generation of Cuban photographers who captures the vibrancy and dignity of his friends, family, and neighbors. He uses his camera to express his deep love and respect for his country and its people--a life of struggle and hardship, as well as pride in their revolution and sense of community.

About the Author

Photographer, journalist and teacher. With a Soviet Zenit camera, some coins and a bag with more illusions than clothing or food, Kaloian began to backpack around Cuba at the age of 18. Photography and journalism then appeared as a necessity and forever became his form of commitment.

Born in HolguĂn, Cuba, in 1981. Graduating in 2008 as a journalist from the University of Havana, Kaloian continued his studies for a diploma in documentary photography at the University of Buenos Aires and the School of Photojournalism (ARGRA). In 2002, he won the "Roberto Carri" International Fellowship and later completed his Masters in Documentary Journalism at Argentina's National University. His first book of photography, CON LUZ PROPRIA, was published by Editorial Abril (Havana) in 2012 and in 2013 by Ocean Sur.
